Home Theatre – Australia, Qld

Projection is made up of two key components, the Projector and the Screen. The screen you use should reflect back to you, the full capability of your projector without any anomalies such as glare, texture and visible frame edge. It should also have the right amount of gain, right in the ‘sweet zone’ for a home cinema and should be the correct colour temperature also.

Screen Materials, gain and frame surrounds

Screen gain or ‘gain’ is a measurement of the screens reflectivity. It has a reference standard by which ‘gain’ is measured against, that being magnesium oxide (plaster). This is a zero gain diffuse material which measures 1.0, this means it has no gain at all. For Home Theatre applications, the sweet zone is 1.1 to 1.3. Any higher than 1.3, the surface can glare or hot spot, any lower than 1.1 means the image can appear quite dull and lifeless which can be likened to using a sheet on a wall instead of a quality screen like our Majestic Screen. Reflective screen materials are the most commonly used in home theatre applications.

Here at Oz Theatre Screens, we utilise only the best components for use on our screens including exclusive use of the blackest material in the world (black Fidelio velvet), which is made in the USA, not china. Combined with Evo Ultra 4K screen vinyl (also not made in china) but made in Europe, which is the smoothest 4K screen material on the market and makes for the ultimate viewing experience.

The idea of a disappearing screen is ultimately what you want to achieve. Reflections coming off the frame, visible grain, or texture on the screen surface are what should be avoided. Projectors today are anomaly free, best to keep them looking that way when in operation. This is the reason we designed and produce our Majestic range of dedicated screens with 4 different screen material choices: Evo Ultra 4K matte white, Evo Ultra Grey 4K (for rooms with ambient light present), Acoustic Vision 4K for behind the screen speaker placement and Optema Rear Projection for commercial applications.

In short, the most important factors are screen surface without hot spotting or any texture, combined with the right gain and colour temp and the blackest possible frame to absorb the soft overscan edge from the projector and to enhance the contrast. Our factory direct pricing is what sets us apart from our competitors. There are no distributors and our screens are built to spec here in Gympie Qld and shipped Australia wide, direct from the manufacturer! We do have a few select respectable retailers who sell our screens such as Sydney Hi-Fi Castle Hill, Blackwood Sound in South Australia and Todds Hi-Fi in Tingalpa Qld. Krix Loudspeakers in South Australia have our 130 inch Majestic with Acoustic Vision 4K on display in their main showroom with a jaw dropping 15.4.8 Dolby Atmos Setup.

Made in Australia

The internet is full of cheap chinese imports and like everything, you get what you pay for. There are only two manufacturers producing Australian made cinema screens today, we are one of those two. We are also the only manufacturer offering a life time warranty on our range of Majestic Screens. We stand behind our product and after 22 years we could not be more proud to still be manufacturing right here on our shores! All the parts we use here to build our screens are sourced from other Australian businesses, from our alloy to our packaging. Moving off shore to china is easy way out. We have full quality control over our screens and can build any custom size or format down to the millimetre at no extra cost.

‘Cinema Showcase’ This room in Victoria with a custom 143 inch Majestic Cinemascope screen coupled with the JVC DLA-Z1 4K laser projector, for a truly stunning image.

150 inch Majestic with our Acoustic Vision AT woven fabric used in a DVD authoring booth at Fox Studios… Yes, it’s that good!

Another happy customer using our AT screen material. Notice it’s just the subwoofer on the floor. The 3 front speakers – LCR (left, centre and right) are in the wall behind the screen. Not only does this give a nice clean look to the room, it provides the viewer with the most accurate sound stage.

You do not need a dedicated cinema room to enjoy the use of a Projector and Screen. It is true that any display device will work best with the lights off in a dark room, it not essential though. Using blockout curtains and blinds can greatly increase your on-screen image quality. Blacks walls and ceilings are not essential but are beneficial.

So next time the sales guy is talking you into buying a large TV, consider coming to see us and we’ll show how much better projection really is!

Black Fidelio Velvet in broad daylight. In fact it’s blacker than PC zero so the photo can’t even show how black it really is. Using the blackest material in the world is one of the things that sets our screens apart from even more expensive options, some of those are on the right of the photo below with black Fidelio far right. The difference is astounding. Fidelio Velvet by JB Martin is still the king of black!

White walls and ceiling and still some light leaking in, yet a stunning image on screen!
